Peace?

I think about peace a lot
it probably stems from being susceptible to being picked on as a kid
I've never felt comfortable in the presence of confrontation
I learned a lot about avoiding confrontation at first
then I learned that you can disarm confrontation more often than you might think
in the end I still think of peace as a haven away from confrontation.

Now I have learned that all confrontation is not all bad
sometimes it is necessary
that's when I learned that confrontation is not synonymous with abuse
that is, abuse in the sense of exerting power over another against their will
which leads me back to thinking about peace

Here on our earth in the 21st century
over two millennia since we started recording our history
we still have strife, cruelty, unchecked anger, and good old fashioned sadism alive and well
part of our society you might say
now why would that be I ask myself
we have available to us all the wisdom of over 2000 years of human culture
and there is a lot of wisdom in there
yet abuse is so prevalent that we are becoming numb to it
it's as if we don't actually collectively envision a world at peace
let alone our world at peace

I feel that we could have peace on our earth, in our time
I feel that we are capable of so much more than we allow ourselves to be
perhaps it's good in a way
perhaps we're not ready for that
maybe 2000 years isn't enough for us all to be enlightened together
I hope that we can limp it along long enough to get close at least
